Shandong's new energy storage centralization scale breaks national record again

On the evening of December 10th,under the unified command of the State Grid Shandong Electric Power Control Center,144 new energy storage power stations in Shandong were simultaneously activated,collectively delivering electric energy to the grid with a maximum discharge power of 8.389 million kilowatts.This broke the record for the largest concentrated deployment of new energy storage in a provincial grid nationwide,set by the company on July 11th,injecting abundant momentum into ensuring power supply during the winter peak season.

In recent years,Shandong's new energy sector has maintained rapid development.As of the end of November,the installed capacity of new energy in Shandong Province reached 125 million kilowatts,including 92.72 million kilowatts of photovoltaic capacity and 27.81 million kilowatts of wind power capacity.

However,the inherent randomness,intermittency,and volatility of new energy sources also exacerbate the difficulty of grid balancing.Taking photovoltaics(PV)as an example,during the midday hours when there is ample sunlight,the PV output in Shandong Province exceeds 50 million kilowatts,but during the evening peak consumption period,the PV output is almost zero.Such significant output fluctuations throughout the day pose a great challenge to the rigid requirement of"real-time balancing for generation"in the power system.

How to address such challenges?New energy storage plays a pivotal role.It serves as a"super charging treasure"for the power grid,effectively functioning as a"spatiotemporal regulator":it"charges"and stores electric energy when there is an abundance of wind and solar power generation,and"discharges"to support the grid during peak electricity consumption periods.This not only provides strong support for power supply assurance but also effectively enhances the level of new energy consumption.

Whether it's to stabilize fluctuations or to shift peak demand to off-peak periods,the essence of energy storage lies in time folding and spatial balancing,which perfectly complements the"growing pains"of new energy.With the rapid development of new energy in Shandong,the development of new energy storage in the province has also entered a fast lane.Since December 2021,relying on the electricity spot market,the energy authorities in Shandong Province have successively introduced policies such as allowing new energy storage demonstration projects to participate in electricity spot trading and capacity compensation,accelerating the development of energy storage from being"policy-driven"to"market-driven"and from scale expansion to high-quality development.

As of now,the installed capacity of new energy storage in Shandong has reached 9.7399 million kilowatts,encompassing various forms such as electrochemical energy storage,compressed air energy storage,and flywheel energy storage.It is estimated that by the end of this year,the scale of new energy storage in Shandong Province will exceed"ten million kilowatts".

Currently,it is the crucial stage of ensuring power supply during the winter peak load period.According to the Shandong Provincial Meteorological Observatory,Shandong Province will experience a large-scale rain and snowfall weather,with the lowest temperature dropping below freezing point,and it is expected that the power grid load will increase significantly.The centralized deployment of this new type of energy storage is a key measure taken by State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company to ensure safe and reliable power supply and promote consumption during the winter peak load period,relying on the new type of energy storage.

To achieve large-scale centralized utilization of energy storage resources,besides relying on a comprehensive energy storage layout,precise and efficient dispatching methods are also indispensable.The State Grid Shandong Electric Power Control Center relies on an intelligent dispatching system to integrate multi-dimensional data such as load forecasting,output of different types of power sources including wind,solar,and thermal power,and customize a unique"charging and discharging schedule"for each energy storage power station,establishing an efficient model of"storing green electricity during the day and supplying good electricity at night".During the peak generation period of new energy in the daytime,the energy storage power stations are organized to fully charge and"build up energy";during the evening load climbing period,quick response to dispatching instructions is made to achieve synchronous discharge.

In this centralized call,the Qicheng Huaneng Energy Storage Power Station located in Linzi,Zibo began discharging at 16:45;while the China Resources Energy Storage Power Station located in Juancheng,Heze began discharging at 17:00.The maximum discharge power during the entire call process occurred at 18:00.

"In this call,a total of 54 independent energy storage systems and 90 supporting energy storage systems for new energy stations participated in centralized discharge,with a maximum discharge power of 8.389 million kilowatts,equivalent to the current maximum power load of Jinan city.This has provided sufficient'warm backup'for power supply during this winter and next spring,"said Zhang Bing,the director of the dispatch and planning department of the State Grid Shandong Electric Power Control Center.

The centralized deployment of this large-scale new energy storage demonstrates the effectiveness of Shandong Electric Power's new energy system construction.

"Shandong's centralized deployment of energy storage has repeatedly broken national records,indicating that the functional orientation of new energy storage has shifted from an auxiliary regulating means to an indispensable key facility for ensuring real-time balance of the power grid and promoting efficient consumption of new energy.Such large-scale centralized deployment tests the precise deployment and rapid response capabilities of Shandong power grid for large-scale energy storage resources,forming a reproducible dispatching mode and management experience,"said Wang Xian,a senior expert at Shandong New Power System Research Center.
